Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero fully expects Chelsea to drop points in the race for the title, and believes they may even do so at the weekend.
Jose Mourinho’s side remain unbeaten in all competitions this season, including the Premier League in which they have won eight of their 10 matches. Indeed, only late equalisers to both Manchester clubs have prevented them from making a perfect start, but even so, their record as it stands has allowed them to open up a four-point lead over second-placed Southampton.
Perhaps more significantly, they are six points clear of reigning champions City. It was therefore imperative that Manuel Pellegrini’s side collected maximum points from their neighbours United on Sunday, and they did so courtesy of Sergio Aguero’s tenth goal of the campaign. And now the Argentina international is waiting for Chelsea to drop points in the race for the title, something he feels they may even do when they travel to Anfield to face Liverpool on Saturday.
“It is important to win,” the 26-year-old former Atletico Madrid man told City TV after the derby win, their fourth successive such victory. “Chelsea are doing very well and they keep winning but we have to go on and I’m sure they will drop some points. They play at Liverpool next weekend and we will see if they drop points but the important thing is that we have to win games.”
City, meanwhile, will put their defence of the title to the back of their minds this week as they return to UEFA Champions League action. The Blues are yet to win in the competition this term, and know they must defeat CSKA Moscow at the Etihad Stadium to breathe life into their bid to reach the last-16. Bayern Munich host Roma in the other match in Group E, a clash which Pellegrini and his side will hope the visitors win so they can set their sights on catching the Italians.
