Sergio Aguero has urged Manchester City to retain the services of Frank Lampard, who he feels could play a huge role in the race for the title.
Nobody expected the England international to pull on the jersey of another Premier League club when he left Chelsea at the end of his contract in the summer, but he agreed a short-term loan deal with the reigning champions, the owners of whom also own his new parent club New York City. The 37-year-old has gone on to make a big contribution at the Etihad Stadium side, hitting five goals in 11 appearances in all competitions.
This has led to calls for the Blues to tie Lampard to an extended deal for the remainder of the campaign, although he is officially expected in the United States in January ahead of the start of the MLS season in March. Aguero, who himself has been in impressive form this term, has now joined the chorus for the Stamford Bridge legend to stay in Manchester, as he believes he could play a big part in their defence of the league title.
“He’s been a really important player for us – a key player,” he told Sky Sports News HQ. “He’s played a really key role in most of the games he’s featured in. It would be fantastic if he could stay – he’s a Premier League legend – and it’s been a real pleasure for me to line up alongside him. I can always say that I played alongside Frank Lampard. It’s something the club will decide but if we could get him to stay longer, I think he could be the difference.”
City leapfrogged Southampton into second place in the Premier League when they beat Ronald Koeman’s side 3-0 at St Mary’s on Sunday afternoon, a result which placed them within three points of leaders Chelsea. Pellegrini’s side will look to continue this form when they travel to the Stadium of Light on Wednesday night to face Sunderland, the team who frustrated Jose Mourinho’s men into a goalless draw at the weekend.
