Aston Villa have emerged as the favourites to sign John Terry, who is available on a free transfer after leaving Chelsea at the end of last season.
The former England international captain ended his lengthy spell at Stamford Bridge upon the expiry of his contract, but was always open to the idea of prolonging his career rather than hanging up his boots. And due to his standing in the game and the fact he was for some time amongst the best defenders in the country, he was never going to be short of offers from other clubs.
Bournemouth, Swansea City and West Bromwich Albion were all prepared to offer him the chance to extend his stay in the Premier League, but due to his reluctance to line up against his beloved Chelsea, he ruled out joining another top-flight club. There was also the opportunity to head abroad China or the United States, but it appears as though his preference is to remain in England.
So this means his next move is likely to be in the Championship, and again, Terry has not been short of offers. The main two came from fierce Midlands rivals Birmingham City and Aston Villa, and according to Sky Sports, the player favours a move to the latter to work with manager Steve Bruce. Indeed, it has even been suggested that the transfer could be wrapped up this week.
This would be a huge coup for Villa, who struggled to come to terms with life in the second-tier following their relegation from the Premier League at the end of the 2015-16 season. They will be expected to mount a serious bid for promotion next term despite the fierce competitiveness of the division, and the addition of Terry would certainly enhance their chances.
