According to reports, Spanish title contenders Atletico Madrid could make an offer for Juan Mata before the 31 January transfer deadline.
The Spanish international was one of the most creative players in the Premier League last season, but since Jose Mourinho returned to Chelsea, he has hardly been given a look-in by the new coach. Mata has made just 13 league appearances this far, compared to the 35 he featured in under Rafael Benitez during the course of last term.
His last start came in the 3-0 win at Southampton on New Year’s Day, yet tellingly, all three of these goals came after he was substituted for Oscar before hour mark. The 26-year-old didn’t take too kindly to being replaced, and threw his arms up in the direction of Mourinho before eventually being calmed by team-mate Michael Essien.
The Portuguese coach later suggested that if Mata wants to leave, the door is open for him to do so. He has since backtracked on this statement, insisting he wants the talented playmaker to remain at Stamford Bridge. However, according to The Mirror, Atletico are planning a move to take the former Valencia star this month.
The tabloid claim’s Mata’s agent and father, Juan senior, will travel to London to discuss his future with the Blues this week. It is claimed that Los Rojiblancos are waiting in the wings should it become apparent the midfielder has no future in England, and will look to take him on an initial loan deal for the remainder of the season ahead of a permanent move.
Diego Simeone’s side are enjoying a fine season, both in Spain and in Europe. They are currently second in the La Liga standings, five points ahead of capital rivals Real and only behind leaders Barcelona on goal difference. And having finished top of their UEFA Champions League group, they face Milan in the last 16.
Although a move to the Vicente Calderon is sure to appeal to Mata, journalist and compatriot Guillem Balague has taken to twitter this week to claim that the Spaniard intends to remain at Chelsea and convince Mourinho of his qualities.
