Robert Fernandez is happy with Neymar’s contract discussions with Barcelona, and fully expects the player to commit to the club for some time.
The 23-year-old has been at the Camp Nou since the summer of 2013, when a fee of €57.1million was enough to prise him from Santos. He has gone on to cement his place as one of the best talents in world football, hitting 58 goals in 100 appearances in all competitions, whilst helping the Catalans win five honours including the treble, including UEFA Champions League, last term.
Neymar is under contract with the Spanish giants until the summer of 2018, and he has recently been linked with an unlikely move to Manchester United. However, it doesn’t appear as though this speculation is causing any sort of concern for Barca, after technical director Robert revealed that he expects the Brazil international to spend the rest of his career at the club.
“We are getting on with the renewal of Neymar and it is going fine,” he told Radio Catalunya on Tuesday. “I do not think it is going to be any kind of problem. I have no doubt that Neymar will spend his entire life at Barcelona. He shows me that every day. He is very happy and has no problems whatsoever to continue wearing the Barcelona shirt for many years to come.”
Neymar was on target again for Barca at the weekend – his fourth of the season – but it was an ultimately disappointing day for Luis Enrique’s men, who fell to a 2-1 defeat at Sevilla. This leaves the champions in fourth place as we head into the international break, yet they are tied with Celta Vigo and Real Madrid and are just a point behind early leaders Villarreal.
