Crystal Palace in advanced talks to sign French striker

According to reports, Crystal Palace are already in advanced talks to take Bafetimbi Gomis from Swansea City in the New Year.

The France international only joined the Swans during the summer, when his contract at Lyon reached its conclusion. Having been linked with the likes of Arsenal and Newcastle United in the past, this was considered something of a coup by the Liberty Stadium club, but they have not yet seen anything like the form which made the 29-year-old such a coveted figure.

Gomis has started just six times in all competitions for the Welsh side, with a further 11 outings from the substitute bench, and he has scored two goals. The reason he has not been given more of a leading role is, of course, down to the Ivory Coast international Wilfried Bony, who is enjoying another impressive campaign for the club with eight goals in 19 appearances.

It is believed that Gomis has a £7million buyout clause in his contract, but this can only be activated at the end of the current season. However, the Daily Star claims Palace have already been in touch with Swansea in regards to signing the striker when the window opens next month, and the tabloid claims these discussions are at an advanced stage ahead of the January sales.

One potential problem could be the player’s salary, as he is thought to be earning a wage of around £50,000-per-week with his current employers. But he could be willing to take a drop in pay if this means he is given regular first team action, something he would almost certainly be given for a Palace side whose leading scorer is midfield star Mile Jedinak with five goals.

Although the departure of Gomis could potentially leave the Swans short of options themselves – particularly should a huge bid arrive for Bony which they can’t refuse – Sky Sports News claims they are close to making a signing of their own. It is claimed that Portugal international Nelson Oliveira, 23, is set to arrive from Benfica on loan for the rest of the season.

Meanwhile, having accepted defeat in a possible offer to lure former Arsenal and Chelsea great Ashley Cole back to the capital from Roma, the Star also claims the Eagles are optimistic of signing Pape Souare in January. The 23-year-old left fullback is plying his trade for Lille, and Neil Warnock hopes to take him for £2.5million although the Ligue 1 club want £3million.
