De Jong poised to cheer Newcastle in wake of likely Cabaye exit

Luuk de Jong is undergoing a medical ahead of his proposed move to Newcastle United, who look set to lose Yohan Cabaye to Paris St Germain.

The future of Cabaye has been of much speculation in recent months, dating back to the summer when he was keen to take advantage of Arsenal’s interest in him. At the time the Magpies rejected a £10million offer from the Gunners, and despite his frustrations, the midfielder was soon back in the first team fold at St James Park.

Having enjoyed arguably his best season to date, the 28-year-old has more recently been linked with Manchester United and PSG. And after having an opening bid of £14million rejected, the latter have now succeeded with an improved offer of at little under £20million. The former Lille man has now travelled to the French capital, where he will discuss personal terms and undergo a medical with the Ligue 1 champions.

In better news for Alan Pardew, a move for de Jong is in the pipeline. During his time at FC Twente the Holland international earned a reputation as one of the most promising strikers in Europe, but he has lost his way somewhat since joining Borussia Monchengladbach in 2012. The 23-year-old has scored just six goals in 36 Bundesliga matches since making his £12.5million switch to the German club, and he is now undergoing a medical on Tyneside ahead of an initial loan deal to Newcastle, which could be made permanent.

Earlier this month, Montpellier had claimed that the Premier League side had agreed a deal to take Remy Cabella at the end of the season. The 23-year-old, who has yet to win a full cap for France, is enjoying another fine campaign at Stade de la Mosson despite being engulfed in a relegation fight, and he is expected to head to St James Park in a £14million deal, and will more than likely be viewed as a direct replacement for Cabaye.
