Manchester United look likely to pull off the biggest transfer deal on deadline day, with Radamel Falcao set to join on a season-long loan deal.
With no European football on the agenda at Old Trafford this season, there were concerns that Louis van Gaal might struggle to add real quality to his United squad this summer. However, not only has he managed to smash the club transfer record by taking Angel di Maria from Real Madrid for £59.6million, it now appears that Falcao will follow suit.
The 28-year-old is largely recognised as one of the most prolific goalscorers in the game, having regularly found the back of the net throughout his career. Last summer Monaco paid around £55million to take him from Atletico Madrid, but the French club have now agreed to let the 28-year-old join United on loan for the duration of this campaign.
It is believed Falcao, who has only recently recovered from a knee injury which sidelined him for a chunk of last season and the World Cup Finals, will cost the Reds a fee of around £6million for the campaign, but there will be an option to make the deal permanent at the end of this time. This will be a blow for Premier League rivals Arsenal, who were also thought to be interested in the Colombian, whilst Manchester City were also said to be keen.
Meanwhile, the arrival of Falcao is believed to have been triggered by van Gaal’s concerns over the fitness of Robin van Persie. The Holland international has struggled with a knee injury of late, and it is thought that surgery is inevitable. And with Javier Hernandez set to join Real Madrid on loan and Danny Welbeck also tipped to leave before the window closes at 11pm on Monday, the Monaco ace could be seen as the ideal signing.
