Gervinho believes Roma can still win the Serie A title this season, despite falling eight points behind current leaders and champions Juventus.
The Giallorossi made a sensational start to the season, winning their first 10 matches and remaining unbeaten until a 3-0 defeat to the Bianconeri in round 18. They have since bounced back with comprehensive victories over Genoa and Livorno, but a series of draws during their undefeated spell means they sit in second position.
Juventus, who have won the last two Scudetto’s, are hot favourite to retain their crown, but Gervinho is refusing to accept that Roma are no longer contenders. Indeed, with 18 matches of the campaign remaining, including a home fixture against the leaders, the former Arsenal man is confident he and his team-mates will soon close the gap.
“Juventus are very strong, but the season has a long way to go yet,” the Ivory Coast international forward told Sky Sports Italia. “It’s true they have a consistent advantage, but we’ll play the head-to-head game at the Stadio Olimpico and we believe in the Scudetto. There are many games to go and the championship is certainly not over.”
Gervinho scored the only goal of the game as Roma beat Juventus in the Coppa Italia in midweek, a result which will have boosted morale in the camp. The €8million recruit has been an excellent signing for Rudi Garcia, his former Lille coach, with four goals in 16 Serie A outings, as well as creating six more. The Giallorossi travel to Hellas Verona on Sunday morning, after the Bianconeri’s trip to Lazio on Saturday evening.
