Whilst he believes there is plenty of quality in the current Liverpool squad, Jordan Henderson admits he would welcome some summer additions.
The Reds came within a whisker of winning a first league title since 1990 last season, but they look like missing out on a top-four place this time round in what has proved to be a difficult campaign on Merseyside. With just three matches left to play – one of which is against newly-crowned champions Chelsea – they are four points adrift of Manchester United.
It is largely thought the £75million departure of Luis Suarez to Barcelona is the main reason for these struggles, although Brendan Rodgers was allowed to spend heavily to bolster his squad. Saying that, only Emre Can and perhaps Alberto Moreno have shown they are worthy of a first team spot, with the likes of Adam Lallana and Lazar Markovic still having much to prove.
Henderson, though, believes the current squad at Anfield has plenty of quality to be considered amongst the best in the Premier League. At the same time, the former Sunderland youngster, who is set to be given the captaincy when Steven Gerrard leaves for LA Galaxy in the summer, admits their chances of mounting a bid for silverware would be boosted with some new arrivals.
“I think we have the players who can improve and have a really good go next season,” he said. “We have quality players. Obviously bringing in people in the summer we will welcome because the better the players we have here the better it is for us in terms of competition to get into the team and push on and try to win trophies and try to play in the UEFA Champions League.”
One player the Reds are thought to be determined to land is James Milner. The England international is out of contract at Manchester City at the end of the season, and although Manuel Pellegrini is keen to keep him at the Etihad Stadium, the midfielder is believed to be given serious thought on a move which he hopes would guarantee him a starting berth every weekend.
Is there enough quality in the current Liverpool squad, or do they need some major summer surgery?
