Leeds United bolster back four options with Old Trafford youngster

Leeds United have handed Scott Wootton a three-year contract.

The 21-year-old spent three years in the youth ranks at Liverpool, before moving on to Manchester United in 2007. Wootton played in the League Cup and even the UEFA Champions League for the Reds, but has yet to play in the Premier League.

He has now decided he needs regular football, and has penned a deal which is designed to keep him at Elland Road until 2016. And Whites manager Brian McDermott clearly feels he could have landed a bargain in the former England Under-17 defender.

“He’s a player who has played in the Champions League and someone we feel will develop with us in the coming years,” he said. “I want to say thanks for the owners in doing the deal and bringing another young player to help us go forward.”

Wootton had loan spells at Tranmere Rovers, Peterborough United (twice) and Nottingham Forest whilst under contract at Old Trafford, making 33 league appearances in the process. He could debut for Leeds at Ipswich Town in the Championship on Saturday.

Meanwhile, El Hadji Diouf has rubbished reports he is seeking to leave Leeds before the 2 September transfer deadline. The controversial Senegalese forward insists he wants to remain at the Yorkshire club and has set his sights on a playoff position.

“I don’t know where all the talk about me leaving has come from,” said the former Liverpool man. “I’m happy here because the fans have always shown me a lot of love and it’s a great club. I definitely think that we are going to finish in the top six.”
