Leicester City turn focus to Phillips after finalising Mahrez deal

Leicester City are expected to turn their attention to Kevin Phillips, after finalising a deal for Riyad Mahrez over the course of the weekend.

The Championship leaders had been chasing the 22-year-old for some time, and a deal has now been wrapped up to take him to the King Power Stadium on a three-and-a-half year contract, subject to international clearance. An undisclosed fee has been paid to Le Havre for the winger, who has been in excellent form this season.

Mahrez has scored six goals and assisted five more in 20 appearances for the Ligue 2 side this term, and Foxes boss Nigel Pearson believes the winger will add a new dimension to his side. All things being well, the supporters could get their first glimpse of the French-Algerian ace next Saturday, when they travel to Elland Road to face Leeds United.

“Riyad is a pleasing addition to a squad that already has a lot of quality,” Pearson told the club’s official website. “Whenever we look to add, it has to be a player that will improve us while complementing what we already have and Riyad certainly fits that description. He is a talented player, technically very good, and he gives us another option.”

Leicester are now expected to turn their attention to former England international Phillips. The 40-year-old helped Crystal Palace to the Premier League last season, and could now be handed a similar task with the Foxes upon his release from the Eagles. When asked about possibly signing the striker, Pearson replied: “We are certainly very interested.”
