Lucas Leiva has emerged as a possible transfer target for Lazio, who could soon be in the market for a midfield player ahead of the new season.
The Biancocelesti expect to lose Lucas Biglia in the coming weeks, with Milan making the Argentina international their next target in what has already been a busy summer at the San Siro. And Simone Inzaghi has cast his eyes towards Merseyside to find a replacement.
According to European transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio, Lazio believe Lucas is an ideal replacement for Biglia, especially as they are able to pick him up for no fee. The Brazilian is still training with Liverpool, but his deal expired earlier this summer so he is available on a free transfer.
During his time at Anfield, the 30-year-old made 344 appearances for the first team in all competitions and helped them win the League Cup in 2012. However, he fell down the pecking order under Jurgen Klopp last season, with just 19 of his 32 outings coming from a starting position.
There appears to be little chance he will be offered fresh terms by the club, so he would likely relish a move to a side which finished fifth in Serie A last term. But the capital club may face competition from Turkish outfit Trabzonspor, who are also weighing up an offer for the midfielder.
