He may be a Manchester United legend, but Ryan Giggs has tipped fierce rivals and neighbours City for the Premier League title this season.
Whilst Jose Mourinho is putting the finishing touches to his squad with the addition of Nemanja Matic earlier this week, his counterpart from across the city has also been busy. Pep Guardiola has spent over £200million on his options this summer, with the possibility of more to follow.
The Blues coach has signed fullbacks Kyle Walker, Benjamin Mendy and Danilo, goalkeeper Ederson, playmaker Bernardo Silva, and youngster Douglas Luiz. Added to what is already at the Spaniard’s disposal, and Old Trafford legend Giggs believes City are the team to beat this term.
“I think Manchester City are the team to beat,” the former Wales international told Sky Sports. “I looked at them towards the end of last season and the forward players they’ve got is scary, with Sergio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus, Leroy Sane, Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva and Raheem Sterling.
“It will be interesting to see how Ederson settles in, because you don’t win the Premier League with an average goalkeeper. They’ve obviously invested heavily on full-backs but the question is still whether Vincent Kompany can stay fit because his influence and experience are key for them.”
Giggs certainly knows a thing or two about winning the Premier League title, having lifted the trophy a remarkable 13 times during his incredible reign at United. His former club have spent big on Romelu Lukaku this summer, and the former winger feels the Belgian will be key to their chances.
“Romelu Lukaku will score goals, there’s no doubt about that,” Giggs added. “He’s still got to work on his first touch. What he won’t have experienced is the pressure of being a Manchester United forward. He wouldn’t have felt that before and you can’t get away with the odd mediocre performance.”
