Jose Mourinho has confirmed that John Terry will be handed a new contract to further extend his time in the heart of the Chelsea defence.
Aside from a short loan spell at Nottingham Forest in 2000, the former England star has spent his entire career at Stamford Bridge. During this time, the Blues legend has helped the club to three Premier League titles, five FA Cups and two League Cups, and he was also involved in their successful UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League glory although he didn’t play in either final.
Since Mourinho returned to the club last summer, Terry has rediscovered the form which made him one of the best central defenders in Europe. And although he turned 34-years-old at the start of this month, the Portuguese coach has now revealed that his captain will be offered the chance to sign a new contract as his current arrangement is scheduled to close at the end of the season.
“There are no doubts that he is going to get another contract,” said Mourinho ahead of the trip to Southampton. “I know that, he knows that. We in the club, in the board, we all know that and I think, also, you have to feel that. Without us confirming anything you have to feel that. He’s a very important player in the team so the next contract, sooner or later, will come. It’s a formality.”
Terry, who has scored in Chelsea’s last two Premier League victories to keep them on track for a first league title since 2010, played his 645th match for the Londoners in the 2-0 win against West Ham United on Boxing Day. He has been an ever-present this season, something which a specific training regime devised by the club’s medical staff and coaches has helped with.
