Juan Mata will be the only new face at Manchester United this month, despite reports linking the champions with Toni Kroos.
Having signed only Marouane Fellaini in the summer transfer window, David Moyes was under pressure to add to his options during the winter. The fact the Reds are lagging behind neighbours City in the Premier League, have been knocked out of both domestic cup competitions and face a fight to finish in the top four has intensified this need.
The club record £37.1million signing of Mata last weekend was greeted with jubilation from the fans, who have been desperate for more creativity in the midfield for some time. The Spaniard has been Chelsea’s best player for the past two seasons, and he made an impressive debut for United in the 2-0 win over Cardiff City on Tuesday evening.
Reports over the past few days claimed the Reds had now turned his attention to German international Kroos, who is said to be at loggerheads with Bayern Munich over a new contract. However, speaking in his Friday press conference, Moyes said: “You can stand your cameras down. I don’t think they will be required. We have done our business.”
It hasn’t all been quiet at Old Trafford on deadline day, though. Fabio has joined Cardiff City for an undisclosed fee, whilst Wilfried Zaha has also signed for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side on loan for the rest of the season. Larnell Cole and Ryan Tunnicliffe are said to be in talks with Fulham, whilst Will Keane is a loan target for Queens Park Rangers.
