Rafael appears surprised by claims from his own agent that he could leave Manchester United during the summer transfer window.
The Brazilian international, who has two caps for his country, has been in England since 2008, when he and his twin brother were lured to Old Trafford. Whereas Rafael has gone on to become a key player in the Reds back four, Fabio has often struggled, and spent last season on loan at Queens Park Rangers who suffered relegation.
The future of the latter has been of some speculation all season, as he has made just three appearances in all competitions under David Moyes and his contract is set to expire at the end of the campaign. It looks likely as though Fabio will be offloaded in the summer, but the agent of the twins claims Rafael could also be on his way out.
“At the moment I can say that they will remain in Manchester until the end of the season, but in summer it is very likely that they can go,” Cassiano Pereira is quoted as saying to calciomercatoweb.it when asked of the future of the 23-year-old’s.
Whilst it would be no surprise if Fabio is not offered a new contract, despite the dip in form of an ageing Patrice Evra and the inconsistent performances of Alexander Buttner, it would be a shock should Rafael leave. And the player evidently feels the same, after posting a message on his Instagram account which simply read: “I’m not leaving.”
