Neil Redfearn believes Leeds United’s 2-0 win against Derby County provides evidence that his side are on the right track.
The Whites welcomed the Championship leaders to Elland Road on Saturday afternoon, in a match which most pundits would have chalked up as an away win. However, the home side were in fine form, and thanks to a Mirco Antenucci double they were able to celebrate a first win over the Rams for 13 outings, a run which dates way back to September 2005.
This was Leeds’ sixth win of a troublesome campaign, and one which lifts them 15th in the standings and five points clear of the danger zone. And whilst they remain some way off a playoff position – Blackburn Rovers are eight points ahead after their 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough – Redfearn believes the victory over Derby is evidence that his side are at least making progress.
“I thought we were excellent, they are a top side, you can see that,” he said in the Yorkshire Evening Post.
“To me this is part of the progression. I think we have been playing well and have played well in games and not got what we’ve deserved. Today we did and the more we put these performances in the better we will get. We came on to them and it shocked them. They played well but we were better.”
The next challenge for Redfearn and his players comes next weekend, when they travel to Ipswich Town in the hunt for successive wins for only the second time this season having previously beaten Bournemouth and Huddersfield Town in September. However, the Portman Road club are in inspired form, with a 1-0 win at Charlton Athletic placing them just a point behind Derby at the head of the table.
