Vlaar is staying at Aston Villa, insists his agent

Despite speculation to the contrary Ron Vlaar will not be leaving Aston Villa on transfer deadline day, insists his agent.

Since starring for Holland at the World Cup Finals this summer, the central defender has seen his reputation rise in recent weeks. Indeed, Louis van Gaal, who coached the Dutch national side at the tournament, is thought to want the player at Manchester United, whilst Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger has also been credited with an interest.

Paul Lambert has made no secret of his desire to keep Vlaar at Villa Park, though, and it appears as though he has succeeded. Speaking about speculation surrounding his client, agent Arnold Oosterveer is quoted in The Guardian: “There is no truth in any of the rumours. He still has a contract with Aston Villa for one year so he will stay there.”

Meanwhile, Villa’s quest to sign Tom Cleverley could be over due to the wage demands of the Manchester United midfielder. Lambert was prepared to spend £8million on the England international, but the player will now have to reconsider his salary expectations if he is to seal the switch. Everton are also thought to be monitoring the situation of the 25-year-old, who has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

Villa fans, are you now confident of keeping Vlaar? And do you think your club should meet Cleverley’s wage demands or leave him to Everton? Let us know your thoughts by joining in the discussion below!
