Danny Welbeck is undergoing a medical at Arsenal, as he looks to seal a dramatic deadline day switch to the Emirates Stadium.
The England international has failed to convince Louis van Gaal of his worth to Manchester United since the Dutch coach arrived earlier in the summer, and he is one of several players deemed surplus to requirements at the club. Indeed, in what has been a busy 24 hours at Old Trafford, Javier Hernandez has left for Real Madrid on loan, whilst Japan international playmaker Shinji Kagawa has returned to Borussia Dortmund for £6.3million.
The departure of Hernandez may have seen Welbeck’s first team chances improve, but with Radamel Falcao expected to link up with United on an initial season-long loan deal from Monaco, the reality is he would be behind the Colombian, Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney in the pecking order. There is also a belief inside the club that young James Wilson, the England Under-19 international, could be fast-tracked into the first team squad.
Welbeck had been linked with both Everton and Tottenham Hotspur, but Sky Sports claim he is currently undergoing a medical with the Gunners. It is no secret that Arsene Wenger needs another frontman, with Olivier Giroud ruled out until the New Year and Yaya Sanogo, the 21-year-old Frenchman, clearly not yet ready to take a leading role in the side. It is believed that Arsenal are aiming to take Welbeck, 23, on loan for the remainder of the campaign, and will pay £6million for the England international who has 26 caps for his country.
Arsenal fans, would you be happy with the addition of Welbeck? Or do you think you should have gone for Falcao instead? Let us know your thoughts by joining the discussion below!
