Wenger admits Arsenal still interested in Mbappe

Despite spending a club record fee to land Alexandre Lacazette, Arsene Wenger has revealed Arsenal are still very much interested in Kylian Mbappe.

The fee which the Gunners paid Lyon for Lacazette could rise to £52million, which dwarfs their previous record of £42.5million which they handed to Real Madrid for Mesut Ozil in 2013. But even the new record would be blown out of the water should Mbappe be prised from Monaco.

The 18-year-old is now widely regarded as the hottest property in world football, having played a key role in helping his side win the Ligue 1 title and reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League last term. A host of clubs are keen to land his signature, led by Spanish giants Real Madrid.

But it has emerged that Wenger met with the young striker after the recent France v England friendly match, where they spoke for three hours about the possibility of a move to the Emirates Stadium. And the Arsenal boss makes no secret of his desire to lure Mbappe to the capital.

“Nobody can say they are not interested in a player of that calibre, because he has such immense quality at 18 years of age,” said Wenger. “All the clubs are open and interested in signing him. He’s a player who, when he gets up in the morning, can choose where he wants to go.”

Meanwhile, it also appears as though Paris Saint Germain are interested in Mbappe. Unai Emery’s side have the financial muscle to compete with any club in Europe, and would have little trouble in paying the £135million transfer fee and offering a salary in the region of £200,000-per-week.
