Agent claims Vidic unlikely to extend Manchester United stay

Nemanja Vidic is set to leave Manchester United at the end of the current season, if quotes attributed to his agent are to be believed.

The Serbian international has been at Old Trafford since his £7million arrival in January 2006, and he has since gone on to establish himself as one of the best defenders in Europe. During his time in England, he has won the UEFA Champions League and four league titles, forging a solid centre-back pairing with Rio Ferdinand for the Reds.

However, whilst Vidic remains a key member of United’s first team squad, he has suffered from injuries in recent times, making just 19 Premier League appearances last season and only six the campaign before. This time round, he has started 13 times, as the champions have struggled to mount a serious defence of their title.

It has been widely expected that David Moyes will offer the 32-year-old a new contract, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season. However, Vidic’s agent has claimed such an agreement, at the moment, seems unlikely, and that his client could instead leave Manchester for one last big move during the coming summer.

“Vidic, given his contract situation, has several teams looking at him,” Silvano Martina told Radio Crc who are based in Italy. “Vidic is a very good player and will have no trouble in finding a new club. For the time being we are remaining calm. However, at the moment, I would rule out a contract extension with Manchester United.”

That Martina gave these quotes to radio station located in Naples can be no coincidence, as Napoli are one of the clubs said to be interested in signing Vidic. Fiorentina, their Serie A rivals, are also thought to be keen. Yet despite these quotes, Moyes is understood to be keep to retain the defender, and will open talks over a new deal shortly.
