Bristol City smash their transfer record for Diedhiou

Bristol City have paid a club record £5.3million to take Famara Diedhiou from Angers.

The Robins finished a lowly 17th in the Championship last season, just three points above the relegation zone, and they are clearly setting their sights higher this time around.

Italian defender Eros Pisano has already joined from Verona on a free transfer, and more significantly, a club record £5.3million has been paid to land Senegal international Diedhiou.

“He fits the bill for us because he’ll complement all of our strikers perfectly,” manager Lee Johnson said. “He’s powerful, he’s quick and I think he’s got the potential to get even bigger and stronger physically.

“The beauty is that now is his time to shine. He’s a goalscorer in that he gets into good areas and can score different types of goals – and he’s got an attitude to shoot, which is what we’re after.”

Diedhiou scored eight goals in 31 league appearances for Ligue 1 side Angers last season, but hit an impressive 21 in 36 whilst on loan in Ligue 2 with Clermont the campaign before.

The 24-year-old, whose fee surpasses the £3.25million City paid for Jonathan Kodjia in 2015, also to Angers, has scored one goal in six international matches for Senegal.
