Steve Bruce admits he is interested in signing Jermain Defoe, as he looks to plot a third successive Premier League campaign for Hull City.
Having returned the Tigers to the top-flight last term after an absence of three years, they avoided an instant return to the Championship by finishing four points above the relegation zone. Having spent around £25million on their squad during the summer on the likes of Michael Dawson, Jake Livermore and Robert Snodgrass, the FA Cup runners-up were expected to push on this season.
However, it has been a problematic campaign for Hull so far, and they began the 2015 calendar year in the bottom three. A 2-0 win over Everton on New Year’s Day has lifted them to 15th place, but Bruce knows he must add more quality to his options. And he has revealed an interest in Toronto FC’s Defoe, although he accepts he is unlikely to have a free run for the striker.
“There’s always speculation, you ask any club in the bottom of the division, all of us would say yes,” Bruce said when asked if he was interested in signing the 32-year-old this month. “Whether we can do it financially is another problem. If he becomes available, which I believe he is, then we’d love to do something. I think it might be too expensive but it’s not a bad bit of speculation.”
Defoe is, of course, a player who would come with a proven pedigree of scoring goals in the Premier League, having done so for West Ham United, Portsmouth and Tottenham Hotspur. For all three of these clubs he played under Harry Redknapp, and the current Queens Park Rangers manager is also believed to be interested in taking the England international.
