Rolando Maran is being lined up to become the new head coach of Chievo, who fired Eugenio Corini on Saturday afternoon.
The Flying Donkeys started the season with just one win from their opening six matches ahead of this weekend, when they travelled to the capital to face Scudetto hopefuls Roma. And they were given little chance by the Giallorossi, who eased to a 3-0 win thanks to first half goals from Mattia Destro, Adem Ljajic, and a penalty from Francesco Totti.
Shortly afterwards it was announced that Corini had been dismissed by the club, despite signing a new contract in the summer which was designed to retain his services until 2017. It is being widely reported that he will be replaced by Maran, as soon as the 51-year-old agrees a settlement with former club Catania who sacked him last April.
Chievo confirmed they had decided to sack Corini, 44, with the following short statement: “Chievo Verona announce that first team coach Eugenio Corini has been removed from his post. The club gives him our most heartfelt thanks for the hard work, professionalism and dedication, wishing him the best for his future career.”
Corini, who made over 130 league appearances for Gialloblu as a midfield player from 1998 to 2003, was first appointed first team coach in October 2012 and went on to rescue them from relegation. However, he left by mutual consent after falling out with directors in May 2013, only to return for a second spell to replace Giuseppe Sannino last November.
