Leeds United boss may have to wait until summer to rebuild squad

Brian McDermott would love to add to his Leeds United squad this month, but he admits he may have to wait until the summer window.

The Whites have already signed Jimmy Kebe and Cameron Stewart on loan this month, as they look to get their season back on track. A 1-0 defeat to Leicester City was their fifth successive reverse, a run which has seen them slip to 12th place in the Championship standings, but still just six points behind the playoff positions.

McDermott admits his chances of securing a top-six place would be improved if he could further add to his options, but has acknowledged that it is difficult to do so. And whilst he will certainly not give up on looking to bolster his squad, he accepts he may have to wait until the end of the season before he can make significant signings.

“We’re trying to do something in January, but I’ve spoken to one of the owners and I’ve said January is a tough time to do deals,” said McDermott. “You might do maybe a couple of pre-contracts to move ahead to the summer; we’re trying to do something now as well. But summertime is when you can really build something, that’s what I think.”

One club who have been able to do a little bit of business on Monday is Millwall. Ian Holloway has taken 32-year-old striker DJ Campbell from Blackburn Rovers for the rest of the season, and he is in line to make his debut against fellow Championship strugglers Sheffield Wednesday at The Den a week on Tuesday.
