Felix Magath insists he has no intention of leaving Fulham this summer, and is determined to lead them back into the Premier League.
The German was installed as Craven Cottage head coach following the February departure of Rene Meulensteen, who himself had only replaced Martin Jol in December. By this time the capital club were in danger of losing their status in the Premier League, and Magath was ultimately unable to lead them out of the relegation mire.
Saturday’s 4-1 defeat at Stoke City on Saturday afternoon finally sealed Fulham’s fate, as it leaves them four points adrift of safety with just one match remaining. This brings an end to their 13-year tenure amongst the elite of English football, but rather than seek a sharp exit, Magath is determined to stick around for the fightback next season.
“I don’t think to do anything else except stay at Fulham and build up a new team – that was the idea when I came here,” said the 60-year-old. “It is clear we have to change something, I want to have success with Fulham in the next years. I will talk about the situation with the owner and we will start to come back. I apologise for not managing the situation because I was convinced we would stay in the league but we are relegated.”
One issue the former Bayern Munich coach will want to resolve before he jets off for his summer holidays is the future of Steve Sidwell. The midfielder has been their standout performer in a disappointing campaign, but with his contract set to expire in the coming weeks, he is eligible to leave and join another club on a free transfer.
The 32-year-old has in the past stated his desire to remain at Craven Cottage, but rejected a 12-month offer in November as he sought a longer deal. Despite their relegation to the Championship, it is thought the Londoners are now prepared to offer him a two-year contract as they see him as vital in their bid for promotion next term.
