Moses targets Champions League return after sealing Reds loan

Victor Moses hopes to help Liverpool return to the UEFA Champions League.

The Nigerian international has been at Chelsea since January 2012, but he has never really established himself as a regular first team fixture. During his time at Stamford Bridge, he made 42 appearances in all competitions, but only 23 of these have come in the Premier League and he has yet to figure for the returning coach Jose Mourinho.

Moses, who began his career at Crystal Palace before joining Wigan Athletic in January 2010, was clearly surplus to requirements at the capital club, who have allowed him to join the Reds on loan for the remainder of the season. At the end of this spell the 22-year-old will hope to make the move permanent, especially if he achieves his aim of helping them into the top-four.

“First and foremost, I’m delighted to have made the loan from Chelsea to a big club like Liverpool,” he told the official club website. “The most important thing is for me to be professional about it and I’m here to do a job for the club. The target is to get into the top four and for the club to compete in the Champions League – and I’m delighted to be here. There are a lot of quality players here – they’re winning games and creating chances. It’s a massive thing for me to be here.”

Moses becomes Brendan Rodgers’ eighth signing of the summer, following Kolo Toure, Luis Alberto, Iago Aspas, Simon Mignolet, Aly Cissokho, Tiago Ilori and Mamadou Sakho. Being able to retain Luis Suarez has also been a huge boost for the Merseyside club, who hope to conclude their activity with the addition of Aston Villa’s out of favour goalkeeper Shay Given.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have started the new season in fine fashion. Their 1-0 win over champions Manchester United on Sunday, courtesy of an early Daniel Sturridge header, is their third straight success in the Premier League, meaning they head into the first international break of the campaign at the top of the table. They have also progressed into the third round of the Capital One Cup, where they travel to Old Trafford to face United later this month.
