Rooney link is wild speculation, insist Stoke City

Stoke City have dismissed reports linking them with a daring move for Wayne Rooney, claiming such speculation is way off the mark.

Manchester United’s all-time top goalscorer is now considered to be merely part of Jose Mourinho’s squad, rather than an integral member of the side he joined way back in 2004. Although he has another year left on his contract at Old Trafford, the England international has been widely linked with a move away from the club during the transfer window this summer.

His former and boyhood club Everton have been heavily linked with Rooney for some time, although they are yet to make an approach despite delving deep into the market since the end of last season. Earlier this week some bookmakers suspended betting on the 32-year-old making a shock move to Stoke, but the bet365 Stadium club have wasted little time in dismissing such a link.

“What I can’t do is shed any light on where the rumours have come from,” Stoke chief executive Peter Scholes told the Stoke Sentinel. “That happens at this time of year. We have some transfer speculation, some of it is based upon some truth, no smoke without fire, but other times you get wild transfer speculation, and the Wayne Rooney one falls into the latter category.”
