Swansea City could turn to £7m Cisse to fill Bony void

Swansea City have identified Papiss Demba Cisse as a potential replacement for Wilfried Bony, who is set to join Manchester City.

Bony has established himself as one of the most prolific goalscorers in the Premier League since joining the Swans from Vitesse Arnhem for £12million in the summer of 2013, with 25 goals to his name from 54 appearances. He was always likely to attract interest from rival top-flight sides, and a fee has been agreed to take him to the Etihad Stadium before the end of the current window.

It remains to be seen how much of this initial £25million Garry Monk will be given to reinvest in his squad, but it is almost certain he will be given the go-ahead to sign a replacement for the Ivory Coast international. And according to Luke Edwards in The Telegraph, the Liberty Stadium club could launch an offer to lure Cisse from Newcastle United in the coming days.

The Senegal international, who like Bony is currently away at the African Cup of Nations, has been at St James Park since Alan Pardew took him from Freiburg for £9million three years ago. The 29-year-old made a fine impact to life in England, scoring 13 goals in 14 matches, but he has struggled to recapture this form and hit just 10 from 60 games in the following two seasons.

Cisse has shown signs of getting back to his best this term, though, and is the Magpies top goalscorer with nine goals from 13 matches, of which he has started just six times. He has already displayed his talent in front of the Liberty Stadium fans, as he scored a brace in a 2-2 draw between Swansea and Newcastle back in October when the pressure was mounting on Pardew.

The Tyneside club are currently without a manager after Pardew left for Crystal Palace, and this could have an impact on their dealings in the transfer window. However, Cisse is down to the final 18 months of his contract, and it is being suggested that they would be willing to cash in on his signature for £7million rather than offer the striker, who turns 30 in June, a new deal.

At £7million, surely Cisse is worth taking a punt on for Swansea? Let us know what you think by joining in the discussion below.
