Swansea growing increasingly confident of retaining star duo

Swansea City insist they are yet to receive any bids for Ashley Williams or Michu.

Both players have proven to be more than capable of holding their own in the Premier League, and it is no surprise they have been linked with rival clubs during the summer. 29-year-old defender Williams, who captained the Swans to League Cup glory last season, has been linked with Arsenal and Liverpool, whilst Newcastle United have also been credited with an interest.

The Gunners are also thought to be keen on signing Michu, 27, who was a sensation in the top-flight upon his bargain £2million switch from Rayo Vallecano last year. The Spanish striker scored 18 goals in 35 league appearances for Michael Laudrup’s, including both goals in a memorable 2-0 win at the Emirates Stadium, which has resulted in his value rocketing.

However, with the transfer deadline now just five days’ away, Liberty Stadium chairman Hew Jenkins insists he has received no calls for either player: “Nothing has changed there, I have not had one call or enquiry,” he is quoted as saying in the South Wales Evening Post. “That’s pure speculation as far as I am aware, and that is good news because we don’t want any interest in those two.”

Swansea have had a disappointing start to the new season, losing their first two Premier League matches this term, 4-1 at home to Manchester United and 1-0 at Tottenham Hotspur. It has been a different story in the UEFA Europa League, though, where they now look certain to reach the group stage having thrashed Petrolul Ploiesti in the first leg of their play-off clash last week.
