Lamela determined to prove worth at Tottenham Hotspur

Erik Lamela is determined to thank Tottenham Hotspur for showing faith in him following a disappointing debut season in England.

The Londoners paid a club record £30million for the Argentine international last summer, as part of the world record fee they received from Real Madrid for Gareth Bale. However, he was troubled by a back injury for much of the campaign, and when the season ended all he had to show for his efforts was one goal from 17 outings in all competitions.

As a result Lamela was not named in Alejandro Sabella’s squad for the World Cup Finals, but at least this allowed him the benefit of a full pre-season. Despite being linked with a return to Italy the former Roma forward remains at White Hart Lane, and he has started all three Premier League games thus far whilst assisting in two goals already.

Lamela also starred as Argentine beat Germany 4-2 in an international friendly on Wednesday evening, earning his seventh cap and scoring his first goal for his country. The 22-year-old is now determined to continue in this rich vein of form, and he has also thanked Tottenham for showing faith in him when many pundits had described him as a flop.

“Last season was complicated for me because of injury, but I feel good now,” he told Corriere dello Sport. “And I have to thank Tottenham for their help and patience – they have always shown faith in me. Now I am on the right path and I want to impose myself in the Premier League. I want to give Tottenham my best. I owe them that.”

Meanwhile, another player who is determined to get his career back on track at Spurs is Aaron Lennon. According to The Telegraph the 27-year-old was set for a loan move to Queens Park Rangers on deadline day, but pulled out of the deal with 15 minutes left on the clock. He has since been named in Mauricio Pochettino’s 25-man Premier League squad, and although Harry Redknapp remains keen, it is believed he is eager to remain at White Hart Lane.
