Robbie Fowler is convinced Christian Benteke will be a hit at Liverpool after the player completed his £32.5million move from Aston Villa.
The Belgian international has spent the past three years in the Midlands, and racked up 49 goals in 101 appearances in all competitions. As soon as it became known that he had a release clause in his contract his future at Villa had been in some doubt, with a host of clubs including champions Chelsea said to be interested in signing the 24-year-old.
But the Reds have been in pole position for some time, and they clinched his signature on Wednesday. Benteke is sure to add more firepower to a side which was depleted by the sale of Luis Suarez last summer and the ongoing injury concerns over Daniel Sturridge, and Anfield legend Fowler is confident Brendan Rodgers has made a shrewd addition.
“I’m absolutely delighted,” he told Sky Sports News. “I think he’s an excellent player, he will get us goals. He’s a proven Premier League player so I’m excited he’s joined. I think we probably needed a player to take a little bit of the burden off a few of the other players as well so hopefully he’ll be a massive success and score loads of goals for us.
“Christian has scored goals everywhere he’s been. He’s a big, strong lad so he’s not going to get knocked off the ball too easily, and when you’ve got a player like that I think he can buy time for the midfield players and even the defenders to get up there and support him so it’s a really good time to be a Liverpool fan.”
