Makelele back in Premier League with Swansea City

Claude Makelele has returned to the Premier League, after accepting a position of assistant coach to Paul Clement at Swansea City.

The former France international was a key member of the Chelsea setup from 2003 to 2008, during which time he made a total of 217 appearances in all competitions. The bedrock of the midfield for Claudio Ranieri and Jose Mourinho, he helped the Blues win two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, and two League Cups whilst in the capital.

After hanging up his boots in 2011 Makelele assisted head coach Carlo Ancelotti at Paris Saint Germain for two years, before landing his first manager role with Bastia. However, this proved to be a disappointing spell and he was sacked after just six months in charge.

The 43-year-old will now resume his coaching career after accepting the offer from Clement, who he worked with during his time as a player at Chelsea. The recently appointed Swansea manager signed a contract for the remainder of the season at the Liberty Stadium earlier this month, with the task of keeping them in the Premier League.
